CELEBRATION OF WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

6th Mar 2024

Holbrook Cottage Celebrates Woman’s History Month March 1 thru March 31. This annual declared month highlights the contributions of women in history and contemporary society. We will be featuring women who created companies that are part of our collection at Holbrook Cottage. Each week we will send you an email that features one of these courageous women that made a positive contribution to the business world in both domestic and international markets. In honor of these women a % of March sales will be given to a Rising Ground founded in 1893 as an orphanage. Today Rising Ground had evolved into an organization that is driven by the belief that each of us can thrive when life has hope and opportunity. Rising Ground provides caring support and proven paths to positive change, helping children, adults and families rise above adversity in NYC and Westchester County, NY.

MEET JOAN COUKOS

EET JOAN COUKOS

Joan majored in Russian and French at Duke University and received an MBA from UNC Chapel Hill before beginning a banking career that spanned New York and Moscow. On a trip to Brussels in 2000, she fell under the spell of old world, handmade chocolates. She brought home two antique molds for old-world inspiration and began creating recipes in her Manhattan kitchen. Her bank coworkers became the first enthusiastic guinea pigs, and upon receiving repeated accolades, she began taking formal steps to becoming a chocolatier, studying chocolate and confectionery arts with a coterie of world-class French, Belgian, American and Swiss chocolatiers in New York and at The World Pastry Forum in Las Vegas. In 2003, she founded CHOCOLAT MODERNE® with a mission to create visually stunning, handcrafted confections filled with perfectly balanced, on-trend flavors that introduce new ingredients to chocolates.

MARY JUREK

MEET MARY JUREK

MARY JUREK

Always interested in design Mary began her career in New York City in the diamond industry where she developed collections for the most prestigious jewelry firms including Tiffany and Cartier. Collaborating with respected artisans of that caliber continues to influence her work today. She established her tableware company in 1998. Unwavering guidelines were established: 1. use only the best metal. 2.Everything made by hand. 4. Preserve the environment. She scouted through SE Asia in search of craftsmen for one year. What evolved was her first hammered stainless-steel collection created by female-owned factories in an economically underdeveloped area of Thailand. With them she made social impact through work. In return, her luxury tableware for the American market was launched. The designs are classic modern with an organic flare in stainless steel. She never compromises on quality. Customers love the fact that stainless steel can go into the dishwasher. Her mantra has always been and continues to be that the customer deserves the best.
